The top 25 music albums of 2011

December 10, 2011 § 2 Comments

So another year has come and gone. To impress (or rather bewilder) my music friends, I have once again put together a list that is my take on the music year 2011.

It’s been an interesting year. I have probably listened to more music than ever.

I hope I have put together a nice blend on my list. Although there are a lot of old men with beards on it.

This is a list of CD albums. Counting down from twenty five to one. I have illustrated each album with a Youtube clip.

You can also get another slightly different version of this list via Spotify: year list 2011 (Neal Morse’s new album is not available on Spotify so there you will have to buy the album).

25. Jonathan Wilson – Gentle Spirit

Desert Raven is a good song, but the album as a whole is uneven.

24. Noah and the Whale – Last Night on Earth

Simple but nice pop. Music that makes you happy.

23. Opeth – Heritage

Swedish death metal with progressive and folk influences.

22. Iron & Wine – Kiss Each Other Clean

Nice folk rock from the South.

21. Deportees – Islands & Shores

Swedish well-produced pop.

20. Eilen Jewell – Queen of the Minor Key

Americana with blues influences.

19. Christoffer Lundquist – Through the Window

Swedish pop with lovely harmonies from the 60s

18. Feist – Metals

A gentle album from the Canadian singer. Lovley.

17. The Human League – Credo

Retro from the 80’s. But unexpectedly charming melodies.

16. Patrick Wolf – Lupercalia

Baroque pop that sounds very English.

15. R. E. M. – Collapse Into Now

The last death rattle from REM. But a good one.

14. White Lies – Ritual

Indie rock that touches the listener.

13. Uriah Heep – Into the Wild

Old men with a vengeance. But quite fresh and dynamic.

12. Black Country Communion – 2

Good second effort from Glenn Hughes, Jason Bonham, Derek Sherinian and Joe Bonamassa.

11. Neal Morse – Testimony 2

Progressive rock music with autobiographical theme.

10. Ryan Adams – Ashes & Fire

Slightly spooky thirteenth album from Mr. Adams.

9. The Kills – Blood Pressures

A dynamic record from this rockduo.

8. The Decemberists – The King is Dead

Like a shadow between two ramshackle outbuildings.

7. The Dears – Degeneration Street

Listened to this album after a recommendation from a friend. I was not disappointed.

6. Dream Theater – A Dramatic Turn of Events

DT grinds on as usual even after Mike Portnoy dropped out.

5. My Morning Jacket – Circuital

Need I say more.

4. Dir En Grey – Dum Spiro Spero

Japanese alternative metal at its best.

3. Nick Lowe – The Old Magic

Old is the oldest. Stylish and fun pop with lounge feeling from Mr. Lowe.

2. Me and my Army – Thank God for Sending Demons

Beautiful demons. The parsnips have germinated.

1. Times of Grace – The Hymn of a Broken Man

Confessional music? Could it be something? This is a metalcore band, born out of Killswitch Engage, with plenty of attitude and a very clear, but not simplistic Christian message.

And Merry Christmas to you all. May the Spirit guide you to your bliss.

  • Times of Grace rockar ju rätt bra….
Nästan i klass med The Haunted.
Påminner en del om All That Remains.
